Hope Community Resource Center (HCRC) was born from Miss Noreen Jacobs pouring her love into the tutoring of six children, from three families, who attended public schools in the New Orleans community. Soon after, she was helping ten children, and the number kept growing. There were parents in the New Orleans East community looking for someone to help their children with school work. These parents wanted more for their children. The parents could not help the children with homework, so they reached out to their community for help. They stated that they did not want their children to have the same negative experiences they had in school.
The parents called Southern University at New Orleans (SUNO) education department, asking for tutoring for their children. The parents were referred to Miss Jacobs, who had persistently went to SUNO to tell staff about her goal of starting a tutoring program in her community. At the time, Miss Jacobs had three years of experience in the public school system, working with children in elementary and middle schools. She saw a need in the schools. What she saw was unbelievable. In every classroom, at less ten students were not on grade level.
After speaking with the manager for approval, HCRC started with a tutoring program in the Wendy's on Read Blvd. HCRC starting supporting youth achievement on a a few tables in the Wendy's dining area at 5701 Read Blvd. New Orleans, LA in February 2012. This was the beginning of HCRC's after-school tutoring program in the New Orleans East community. After tutoring, Wendy's rewarded our students with a Frosty for their hard work. Wendy's also gave HCRC 250 coupons for free Frostys. We used them for two events in the New Orleans East community; a Book Giveaway at Joe Brown Park on October 27, 2012, and a Christmas Book Giveaway at Schaumburg Math and Science Academy on December 20, 2012. The kids were so excited to receive their books and Frosty coupons. The smiles on their faces were priceless. Witnessing the achievements reached by the youth in the program and the joy expressed by those participating in the giveaways solidified Miss Jacobs drive to build on the early success of HCRC.
Later HCRC moved to our office at 5630 Crowder Blvd. Suite #203, New Orleans, LA, 70127. Miss Jacobs was excited about the grand opening of East New Orleans Regional Library and Norman Mayer Library. She attended the ribbon-cut ceremony with the hope of continually tutoring children in our community. In 2013 HCRC established a partnership with the New Orleans Public Library and SUNO Child Development and Family Studies. In 2014, the tutoring program expanded to the Algiers Regional Library.
HCRC has offered tutoring each school year for over the past decade, each year witnessing the achievement of youth who were under-performing in school due to the lack of academic ad social support. Over the years we partnered with various organizations to offer summer camps, backpack and school supply giveaways, parenting programs and special events for the youth and families in our communities.
HCRC's goal has been to help fill in the educational gaps of our children. These need is even more essential as our children struggle to overcome both educational and social challenges and deficiencies created by shutdowns and distant learning due to Covid in 2020. We are assisting and giving children the essential foundation to become active and productive citizens in our society.
